MT. VERNON, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team ended the 2013 calendar year Tuesday in near record-setting fashion. The Ladies fired in a total of 15 three-pointers at Ariel Arena and defeated cross-county host Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, 86-55.

Even though the Ladies' previous game was three weeks ago, they didn't show any signs of rust against the Cougars. Their three-point output came on 24 attempts and marked the second year in a row the Ladies dropped 15 long balls on Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Additionally, those 15 three-pointers were just one short of the Kenyon single-game record and the Ladies' three-point shooting percentage (.625) was the second-best in program history (with a minimum 10 attempts).

The Ladies wasted no time in flaunting their accuracy. They nailed their first six shots of the game and raced out to a 15-2 lead. Senior Maureen Hirt was 4-of-4 from three-point land in the first half alone. Freshman Miranda Diesz was 3-of-5, while Lauren Kriete, Maggie Boelter, and Meredith Williams all added a pair of treys before the half was over. Mt. Vernon Nazarene was able to pull within seven points of the Ladies around the 13-minute mark, but another shooting spree got Kenyon into the break with a rather comfortable 57-31 advantage.

Kenyon starters sat for most of the second half, but that didn't keep them from racking up double-digit scoring totals. Hirt led the bunch with 20 points in 22 minutes of playing time. She now has 1,523 career points and moved into third-place among the Ladies' all-time scoring leaders. Kriete tossed in a season-high 13, Boelter pitched in with a dozen, and Williams finished off the game with ten points. Boelter also chalked up nine assists, improving her career total to 291 and pushing her into fifth-place among Kenyon's all-time best.

Overall, the Ladies shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63) for the game and built leads as large as 35 points. In the second half, the Cougars never got closer than 25 points. In addition to the offensive fireworks, Kenyon's defense deserved some credit for the lopsided win. The Ladies forced Mt. Vernon Nazarene into 22 turnovers and held the Cougars to 31.3 percent shooting (20-of-64).

The win was Kenyon's fourth straight and ran the Ladies' record to 7-3. The Cougars, who have lost 11 in a row, are now 1-11. Next up for Kenyon will be a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday. Tip off for that contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
