Box Score
GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team had a tough time keeping a handle on the ball Friday night at Livingston Gymnasium. The Ladies tallied a season-worst 21 turnovers, which resulted in a 66-54 loss to the host Denison University Big Red. The loss was the Ladies' third straight, the first time that's happened since the middle of the 2010-11 season.
Kenyon is now 14-7 overall and 8-4 within North Coast Athletic Conference play. Denison used the victory to creep up the conference standings and catch the Ladies in second place. The Big Red are now 13-8 overall and 8-4 in NCAC action.
The Ladies were knocked out early, falling behind by as many as 18 points in the first half. After senior
Katie Adlam converted a layup with 13:40 glowing on the clock, the Ladies trailed by just one point (10-9). Over the course of the next six minutes, however, Denison outscored Kenyon 13-0. The Big Red's run was made possible in part by six Kenyon turnovers and three missed shots.
To their credit, the Ladies did fight back. During the last five minutes of the half, Kenyon clawed its way to within ten points and faced a 34-24 deficit at the break.
Senior post
Kayla Ernst ranked things up in the second half, scoring 19 of her game-high 27 points, but her efforts alone were not enough to get the Ladies any closer than seven points for the remainder of the game. Ernst dominated down low, shooting 75.0 percent (12-of-16) from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 at the free throw line. She also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and had three steals.
Kenyon's second leading scorer was junior
Maureen Hirt, who managed 11 points. Normally a dead-eye from the outside, Hirt struggled to find her stroke Friday and connected on just one of seven three-point attempts. Adlam rounded out Kenyon's top scorers with nine points.
The Ladies have little time to dwell on the result. They return to the hardwood Saturday at Tomsich Arena to face the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. Tip-off for that game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
