Missed opportunities haunt Ladies in season opener

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team opened the 2013 season by hosting Wilmington College on Friday evening. The visiting Quakers jumped out to an early lead with two first-half goals and wound up holding on for a 2-1 non-conference victory.

For Kenyon (0-1), it was a game of missed chances. Junior Becca Romaine could have put the first tally on the scoreboard, but her shot from the right side of the box sailed just a sliver wide to the left. About four minutes later, Wilmington (1-0) netted its first goal off a corner kick. The corner was sent in by Rachel Gutowski and finished by Erika Good.

In the 34th minute, the Quakers struck again. This time Angela Phillips chipped in a shot over Kenyon keeper Lauren Wolfe's outstretched hands. About five minutes after that, Romaine had another opportunity thwarted. Her shot toward the left side of the net was first tipped by goalkeeper Grace Hignite and then ricocheted off the post.

Kenyon played a bit more aggressively in the second half and persistence finally paid off for Romaine, who created her own shot at the top of the box and buried her first goal of the season into the Quakers' net with a little more than 25 minutes left to play.

It wasn't all about the offense for Kenyon. Wolfe made a couple of stellar saves early in the second half to keep the Ladies in the game. With Wilmington's Camille Gentile firing a shot right up the middle, Wolfe made a sprawling save. The rebound came back out to Gentile, who fired again. Wolfe, just getting to her knees, lunged to her right to make another remarkable stop.

Late in the game, Romaine and freshman Maggie Smith each had a quality shot, but Romaine's cruised just a bit too high and Smith's was saved by Hignite.

The Quakers ended up out-shooting the Ladies, 11-7. Hignite made three saves, while Wolfe totaled six.

Kenyon will get right back at it Saturday when it hosts Hope College in a contest that starts at 2 p.m. Hope (1-0) is coming off a 3-1 win over Denison University.
