ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team finally got the goal it's been searching for, but Tuesday night one goal just wasn't enough. The University of Mount Union Purple Raiders rallied from one goal down, took advantage of a late penalty kick, and defeated the Ladies 2-1 at Mount Union Stadium.
Kenyon (1-5-0) got on the board first courtesy of junior Becca Romaine, who scored off an assist from freshman Taylor Jamil. The goal was Romaine's third of the season and ended a two-game scoreless drought for the Ladies. The goal was also the 28th career score from Romaine, who ranks fifth all-time among the Ladies' all-time scoring leaders.
While the Kenyon women got the start they wanted, their lead didn't hold up for long. It took just 86 more seconds of game play for the Purple Raiders (5-1-1) to knot things up. Shanna Evans connected with Gina Wall on that scoring play.
Things remained all square until the game's 78th minute. That's when Kenyon was called for a foul in the box and yielded a penalty shot to the Purple Raiders. Kolbie Haines took the shot and delivered what would hold up as the game-winner.
The Ladies will look to get things back on track when they return home for three straight games at Mavec Field. The first of those three will be Saturday at 1 p.m. against Case Western Reserve University.
