GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Defense was the name of the game Saturday, as the Kenyon College Lords soccer team engaged in a scoreless draw with the No. 9-ranked DePauw University Tigers. The game was the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for Kenyon and the draw was the first blemish on the Tigers' record, which now stands at 10-0-1.
Meanwhile, Kenyon moved its record to 7-2-1 and has gone undefeated in its last six outings. Additionally, the shutout was the Lords' third straight and fourth in their last five games. The Kenyon defense last allowed a goal in the second half of its game against Wilmington College on September 18. That's a span of 329 minutes.
DePauw did hold a slim 14-9 advantage in shots taken and a larger 10-4 cushion in corner kicks, but those numbers matter little when the ball never crosses the goal line. Freshman
Sam Clougher guarded the Lords' net for the duration. He ended up with a season-high eight saves and trimmed his goals against average to 0.49 for the season.
Next up for the Lords is another quality opponent in Heidelberg University. The Student Princes will travel to Gambier on Tuesday with a 5-2-0 record.
