GAMBIER, Ohio  – Becca Romaine and the Kenyon College Ladies soccer team controlled much of Saturday afternoon's match against DePauw University and had every opportunity to earn its first win in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener. It took two overtime periods to decide a winner, but the Tigers prevailed by capitalizing on a late foul to set up the game-winning goal.

Both teams jostled through the 14:30 of overtime played with each having ample opportunity to end the game with the golden goal. However, it was DePauw that received a lucky break by drawing two fouls in succession at nearly identical places on the pitch. On the second, Megann Lear drew contact just before entering the box to set up a free kick. She sent in a shot that sliced to the outside post and rang its bell, leading to teammate Caroline Zadina to come in and clean up the loose ball for the game-winner.

Just minutes before the game-deciding tally, Romaine nearly ended the contest with one of her six scoring opportunities of the afternoon, but her shot sailed high of the goal to continue play. Romaine also went postal before regulation ended when her shot in the 84th minute hit the top-inside corner of the cage and bounced back into the field of play. The senior led the team with seven shot attempts, four landing on goal.

After a scoreless first half, Maggie Smith scored her third goal of the season and the first of the match when she found an opening and teammate Taylor Jamil found her from the near side of the field. The connection led the Smith taking a healthy strike that found the back of the net, beating DePauw goalkeeper Emma Cooper top shelf. Madi Kim was also credited with an assist on the goal.

DePauw tied the game with 8:52 remaining when Elizabeth Seewer scored her first goal of the season from 15 yards out, going to Kenyon keeper Lauren Wolfe's left and rolling it in. That goal shifted the momentum toward the Tiger's side, though the Ladies kept driving the ball deep into DePauw territory all the way to the very end.

Both teams finished with 21 shots, but Kenyon peppered Cooper with 14 in the second half alone. The Ladies had the advantage in corner kicks, 9-3.

Wolfe finished with eight saves against the Tigers, while Cooper made a total of 12 stops against the Ladies.

The loss drops the Ladies to 2-6-1 overall on the season as they pick up the loss in their NCAC opener. Kenyon will play their last nonconference match at Capital University on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m.
