LEXINGTON, Ky.  – The Kenyon College Ladies soccer team went into the Transylvania College Showcase seeking its first win of the season. Behind the leg of Becca Romaine, the Ladies captured that inaugural win when the junior scored the game-winning goal with under three minutes left in the final overtime session against No. 16 Centre College.

Kenyon (1-2-0) and nationally-ranked Centre (2-1-0) took a 1-1 draw into overtime despite the Colonels peppering the Ladies' defense with 12 shots in the second half and three more in 16:19 of overtime play. Kenyon goalkeeper Lauren Wolfe made 10 saves, including six after the first half to keep Centre in line.

Though the Colonels controlled the ball for much of the two overtime sessions, Kenyon came out on a late break to deliver Centre its first loss of the season. Centre missed out on a scoring chance when an incidental collision deep in the Kenyon defensive zone caused a change of possession. After driving the ball down the other side of the field, Jane Symmes tossed a throw-in to Olivia Lloyd, who tapped it to Romaine streaking down the right side of the field. Romaine beat the collapsed Colonel defense and directed an easy tap shot to the left side of the Centre cage for the game-winning goal with 2:41 left on the clock.

The goal was Romaine's second of the season in just her third match. Last year she led the North Coast Athletic Conference with 13 goals in 20 matches en route to Second Team All-NCAC placement. Romaine finished the match versus Centre with five shots, three of which were on goal.

Junior Anna Walley scored the game's first goal at exactly the 18-minute mark, capitalizing on a loose ball in the Centre goal box. Romaine sent in long-distance shot that Colonel goalkeeper Holly Hilton came out to play, but only got a piece of. The rebound came directly to Walley, who finished the job to put the Ladies up 1-0.

Brandy Orth-Becker was Centre's lone goal scorer, scoring her first goal of the season at 43:49 to tie the match. She is now the fifth different Colonel player to score a goal this season.

The win comes despite the Colonels outshooting the Ladies, 19-13, and limiting Kenyon to zero corner kicks.

Centre (2-1-0) came into the match undefeated and ranked by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as 16th in the nation, two spots higher than their preseason ranking. Last year, they won the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championship and advanced to the second round of the Division III NCAA Tournament.

Kenyon will continue its stay at the Transylvania College Showcase to play the host Pioneers at Hall Field tomorrow. The kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
