OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team experienced its worst shooting night of the season and opened the door for the host Oberlin College Yeowomen to walk away with a 54-50 North Coast Athletic Conference win at Philips Gym on Wednesday.
Riding a five-game win streak in which they posted a combined shooting percentage of .484, the Ladies took a step backward with a .317 showing (20-of-63) against the Yeowomen. The loss not only snapped that five-game win streak, but was also the first conference loss of the season for Kenyon, which is now 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC.
Oberlin, a team that finished last season with a 9-17 record, continued to surprise this season as Wednesday night's win bumped the Yeowomen to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC. Oberlin's win over Kenyon was its first since a 62-56 victory on January 4, 2003. Since then, the Ladies had reeled off 21 straight over the Yeowomen.
Despite their shooting struggles, the Ladies still managed to get to halftime with a 25-22 lead.
Lauren Kriete scored seven points in those first 20 minutes and senior guard
Maggie Boelter tossed in six points on a pair of three-pointers that occurred within the game's first three minutes and boosted Kenyon to an 8-0 advantage.
That eight-point lead would be the high-point for the Ladies. Oberlin, which only shot 29.6 percent (16-of-54) for the game, came back to tie things up at 10-10 and then took its first lead with a free throw on its next possession. From there, the lead switched hands five times before the break with neither team leading by more than four.
At the start of the second half, Oberlin went on a run and used a jumper from Christina Marquette to open up a 10-point lead (37-27) with 15:38 remaining in the game. That lead didn't last either. Kenyon answered with a run that was highlighted by three-pointers from Kriete and
Maureen Hirt. At the 10:16 mark, the teams were all square (41-41) again.
Over those last ten minutes, Oberlin pounded the ball down low and maintained the lead for the rest of the way. The Yeowomen's final three field goals all came by way of layup, while the remainder of their points were scored at the free throw stripe.
With both teams struggling to find open shots from the field the difference came at the free throw line, where Oberlin was 17-of-21 and Kenyon was just 5-of-7.
Hirt ended up leading the Ladies with 18 points and nine rebounds, while both Boelter and Kriete added ten points and a combined 11 rebounds. At the other end of the floor, Marquette finished with 17 points and 20 rebounds for the Yeowomen. Lindsey Bernhardt chipped in with 18 points and Malisa Hoak finished with 11.
