GAMBIER, Ohio –
Marie Laube's goal off a free kick in the 84th minute lifted the Kenyon College women's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 win over the College of Wooster Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference match at Mavec Field.
The win was Kenyon's third out of its last four matches and moved the team to 3-0 in conference play.
Maggie Smith got things going for the Ladies in the sixth minute as she finished off a corner kick from
Sarabeth Domal for her fourth goal of the year.
Wooster tied it up in the 31st minute, however, as Carly Joliat fired a free kick from long range and watched as it got by a host of Kenyon defenders into the right corner of the goal.
The Ladies were able to take a 2-1 lead into halftime as
Becca Romaine scored on an assist from Smith in the 39th minute.
It wasn't until the 60th minute that the Fighting Scots found another equalizer. Jessica Friesen fired from about 25 yards and slipped the ball just inside the right goal post to tie the match at 2.
Kenyon took another lead off the foot of Romaine in the 63rd minute as she fired from about 15 yards to the right side of the net.
For Romaine, it was her 41st career goal which moved her past former Lady Laurie Danner for third all time.
The excitement of the match continued though for Wooster who didn't let up.
In the 70th minute, a pass came into the box and touched the hand of a Kenyon defender which allowed Lauren Hancher to convert a penalty kick.
Another tying goal didn't faze Kenyon though as it grinded until Laube's free kick after a foul gave the home team a 4-3 win.
The Ladies out-shot the Fighting Scots 16-14 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Kenyon returns to the pitch October 14 when they visit Denison University for a 7 p.m. match.
