GRANVILLE, Ohio – With just 28 seconds remaining in the second overtime of Wednesday evening's soccer game at Denison University, Kenyon College senior
Nate Petrou scored an improbable goal that gave the No. 2-ranked Lords a 1-0 victory and extended the team's win streak to a dozen games.
Prior to Petrou's goal, Kenyon out-shot Denison 20-5 in the soggy conditions at Barclay-Thomsen Field. Both teams had one shot in the first overtime period and both teams had two shots in the second overtime. Despite consistently knocking on the door, the Lords just couldn't get one to go over the goal line.
With all signs pointing toward a tie game, Petrou wound up near the sideline and about 35 yards away from the goal. His kick sailed toward the Denison net, where it was misplayed by goalkeeper Blake Schach. The ball slipped through Schach's hands and struck twine. It was Petrou's second goal of the season and the seventh of his career.
The win gives Kenyon a 12-0-0 overall record and a 4-0-0 North Coast Athletic Conference record. It also marks the Lords' best start to a season since the 1990 team ran off 19 consecutive wins before losing its first game in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The loss set Denison's records back to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference.
The road ahead for the Kenyon men doesn't get any easier. Saturday, the team travels to Crawfordsville, Indiana to take on No. 16-ranked Wabash College (10-1-2) and then returns home to face Ohio Wesleyan University (10-3-1) on Tuesday at Mavec Field.
Senior Nate Petrou fired in the game-winner from about 35 yards out to give the Lords
a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Denison University.
