MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College volleyball team, playing a bit shorthanded due to some injuries, could not get in a groove Saturday at Allegheny College. The Ladies ended up dropping the first 25-8 and played catch-up the rest of the way as the host Gators went on to take the second and third sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-16.
The Ladies (5-20 overall, 0-5 NCAC) had just three kills in the first set and committed seven attack errors. That allowed Allegheny (16-9, 2-3 NCAC) to run out to leads of 5-0 and 10-2. The Gators pounded out 13 kills in the set and were led by Hannah Cubarney, who had six of those 13 kills.
The Ladies snapped out of their funk in the second set and managed to put away 15 kills. Following three straight kills from freshman
Tierney McClure, the Kenyon women moved to within two points (17-15) of Allegheny. That, however, would be as close as the Ladies would get. The Gators scored four of the set's next five points and went on to nail down the six-point win.
Kenyon trailed early in the third set, too, and never got closer than five points the rest of the way. Freshman
Lauren Kerr smacked five kills in the final set and finished the day with a team-best 10 kills. Senior
Hannah Shank delivered 22 assists and 10 digs, while McClure finished with seven kills and eight digs.
Next up for the Ladies is another conference game. Friday, the Kenyon women will travel north to take on the Oberlin College Yeowomen in match that is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
Senior Hannah Shank had 22 assists and 10 digs during the Ladies' NCAC match
at Allegheny College on Saturday.
