Kenyon pulls off double-overtime upset of Allegheny

GAMBIER, Ohio – With less than five minutes to play in double overtime Saturday, Kenyon College senior Becca Romaine booted home a game-winning goal that propelled the Ladies soccer team to a stunning 3-2 victory over the Allegheny College Gators, a powerful squad that won both the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles.

The win put Kenyon's overall record at 5-6-1 and kept the Ladies in first place in the NCAC with a 2-0-0 mark. The loss dropped Allegheny to 8-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

With nothing settled in regulation or even the first overtime period, Romaine and the Ladies were not going to settle for a tie at home. Freshman Gillian Blackwell dribbled through the right side and laced a pass toward the center of the Gators' box, where Romaine was waiting. Once Romaine got control of the ball she ripped her shot, from about eight yards out, into the left corner of the net. The goal was her team-leading seventh of the season and the 39th of her Kenyon career.

The stage for that dramatic finish was set with regulation goals from sophomore Maggie Smith and senior Katie Hoener. Way back in the early stages of the game, Smith put the Ladies on the board first with a goal that was assisted by Romaine. That goal, Smith's third of the season, occurred just 1:34 from the start.

Allegheny managed to knot the game up nine minutes later and the 1-1 score held through the half. Three minutes into the second half, Smith helped put Kenyon back in front again. This time she assisted on a goal that was netted by Hoener. That Ladies' lead held up for thirty minutes. Allegheny then tied things up again, this time with less than 12 minutes left in regulation.

Kenyon held a 16-12 advantage in shots throughout the game, while Allegheny had a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Alissa Poolpol made five saves for Kenyon and Gabby Curtis made seven saves for Allegheny.

The Ladies will now look ahead to next Saturday when they host The College of Wooster Fighting Scots in a 1 p.m. conference contest.
