Ladies wrap up 2014 with split against Waynesburg & Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – Kenyon College wrapped up its 2014 season with a pair of matches against Bethany College and Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon at the Hummel Field House. The Ladies won in three sets over Waynesburg to start the day but fell to host Bethany in three sets.

In the opener, Kaitlyn Power led the Ladies collecting 10 kills on 12 errorless attempts for an .833 attack percentage. Jensen Shurbert handed out a season-best 29 kills while Katie Goulder paced the Kenyon defense with 14 digs.

After finding themselves down 6-1, the Yellow Jackets rallied and brought the score to 11-10 Ladies after an attack error. That would be the closest they got the rest of the way however. Kenyon closed the first set on a 14-1 run. Goulder had three kills during that stretch while Tierney McClure collected a kill and pair of aces.

Set two went back and forth before the Ladies rallied back to win 25-20. The Yellow Jackets led 18-17 after a Ladies service error but Kenyon scored three straight points to regain control and eventually win.

The third and final set was all Kenyon as they hit .200 and held Waynesburg to a -.097 attack percentage. Kenyon prevailed in set three 25-12.

Lauren Kerr led the Ladies in their second match against Bethany totaling 13 kills with a superb .391 attack percentage. But that wouldn't be enough as the host Bison won in three sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-23).

Kenyon held a 12-8 lead in the first set before a 5-0 run by Bethany gave the home team control of the set. Dylana McKenzie had three kills in that run. The Ladies tied the match at 15 after an attack error but never found the lead again as the Bison won 25-17.

Set two saw Bethany hold Kenyon to a -.056 attack percentage en route to a 25-13 win.

The third and final set was fantastic as both teams went back and forth. Kenyon held a 22-21 lead after a McClure kill but the Ladies weren't able to pull through to push the match to a fourth set. The Bison got a pair of attack errors from the Ladies and a kill from Lynsie Mandt to help them win 25-23.

Shurbert had 10 digs and a team-high 23 assists while Rachael Thorson had 10 digs. McClure added seven kills.

Kenyon's six wins are the most since the 2011 squad produced 14.
