Season finale slips out of Lords’ hands

GAMBIER, Ohio – Trailing by just one point at halftime, it appeared the Kenyon College football team had a good shot at upsetting rival Denison University on Saturday at McBride Field. The Big Red, however, rang up 19 third-quarter points and won the 2014 season finale by a 33-19 count.

Denison (6-4, 5-4 NCAC) began the scoring with a bomb in the first quarter. On the Big Red's second play of their second possession, quarterback Brandon Sklenar connected with receiver DuShawn Brown for a 64-yard scoring strike. That duo quickly became the story of the game. At least one of the two accounted for every touchdown Denison registered.

Early in the second quarter Kenyon cut into the lead. Senior Jack McDonald blocked a Denison punt and freshman Curt Williams fell on the loose ball at the Denison one-yard line. One play later, junior Blake Calcei was in the end zone. The Lords' two-point conversion failed and Kenyon trailed by just one.

Before the half could come to a close each team tacked on another seven points. Denison did so first with a Sklenar eight-yard pass to Everett McGregor. Kenyon responded on its next drive when senior Brandon January had a 29-yard kick return, setting the Lords up at their own 44-yard line. Sam Appel, who took over at quarterback for injured starter Jake Bates, later connected on a 26-yard pass to Pierce Brady. That brought the Lords down to the Denison 12-yard line, where January finished off the scoring drive with a touchdown run.

Brown and Sklenar then took over the show. Brown opened third-quarter play with an 83-yard kick return to put the Big Red in front 20-13. Sklenar then ran in two touchdowns himself. One was from 15 yards out and the other from 42 yards out. By the time the game was over, Sklenar had 151 rushing yards, 176 passing yards, and four combined touchdowns. Brown ended the game with four catches for 125 yards.

In the fourth quarter, Calcei found the end zone once against for Kenyon (1-9, 1-8 NCAC). His four-yard TD run capped off a 14-play, 88-yard drive that finalized all scoring. In addition to his two touchdowns, Calcei logged 17 rushing yards and 42 receiving yards against the Big Red.

January, a senior, piled up 82 yards in his final game. He'll exit the program with 1,897 career rushing yards, a mark that ranks eighth all-time in Kenyon history.  January also had three catches for a dozen yards against Denison.

Tight end Greg McIntosh led the Lords with six receptions, which he turned into 36 yards. On the throwing end, Appel was 16-of-28 for 145 yards.
