Ladies upend Emory in first round of NCAA Tournament

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The never-say-die Kenyon College women's soccer team extended its season Saturday by producing a 1-0 victory over the No. 21-ranked Emory University Eagles in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, which is being held at Thomas More College.

The win was the second in tournament history for the Ladies. The last occurred in the first round of the 2006 tournament, when the Ladies advanced with a 2-1 win over Capital University. Saturday's win also boosted the Kenyon women into the second round, where they will take on host and No. 9-ranked Thomas More at 1 p.m. Sunday. Thomas More was a 6-0 first-round winner over Maryville College in game that was also played Saturday.

Kenyon carved out its spot in the second round with a goal a little more than halfway into the first half. With 17 minutes showing on the clock, senior Becca Romaine booted in her team-best 17th goal of the season, beating Emory goalkeeper Liz Arnold. Her total of 17 goals is the fifth-best single-season output in program history. Additionally, Romaine now has 49 career goals, the third-best total in program history.

Romaine's shot was just one of three in the game for the Kenyon women. At the other end of the field, Emory fired away 23 times at the Ladies' net, but junior goalkeeper Alissa Poolpol stonewalled the Eagles throughout the game, making a season-high 10 saves. Poolpol now has 91 saves on the season and a sparkling 1.12 goals against average. The shutout win was her seventh of the season.

Kenyon moves on with a 13-7-1 record, while Emory finishes its season with an 11-2-6 mark.
