Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cold shooting costs Lords a loss to Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – A poor-shooting game spelled defeat for the Kenyon College Lords basketball team, which saw its record fall to 0-2 after Sunday's 73-59 loss to the Thiel College Tomcats in the second and final round of the Buzz Ridl Classic at Westminster College.

Kenyon put up 70 shots against the Tomcats, but converted just 19 of them for a .271 shooting percentage. While the overall numbers were undesirable, the Lords did turn in better numbers from three-point territory (6-of-19, .333) and at the free throw line (15-of-17, .882).

Unfortunately for the Kenyon men, the worst of the shooting woes occurred in the second half. Kenyon fired at 40 percent through the first 20 minutes of play and trailed just 38-35 at the half. Over the final 20 minutes, however, the Lords were 5-of-35 (14.3 percent).

At the other end of the court, Thiel (2-0) didn't face the same struggles in finding the cylinder. The Tomcats shot 47.8 percent and had four players reach double-digit scoring marks. Eric Mallinger led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. Luke Kochka had 14, Khari Bass scored 13, and Justin Dade added 11.

Despite the differences in shooting marks, Thiel didn't really shake the Lords until late in the game. With about 14 minutes left to play Tim Connolly connected on a three-pointer for Kenyon and brought the Lords to within two points (48-46). At that point, Thiel answered with a 7-0 run and never let the Lords get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Connolly led Kenyon in scoring with 15 points. He went 3-of-5 from three-point range and was 6-of-8 at the free throw line. Dan Voigt added ten points and ten rebounds. John Bray chipped in with another nine points for the Lords and Brien Comey grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Kenyon has just one day to regroup. The Lords will host their home-opening game Tuesday against Ohio Wesleyan University. That conference contest is scheduled for a tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
