Clougher helps lead Kenyon to second straight Sweet 16

GAMBIER, Ohio – With the help of sophomore goalkeeper Sam Clougher, the Kenyon College Lords advanced 3-0 on penalty kicks to the round of 16 in the their matchup with the Thomas More College Saints Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field in the NCAA Tournament.

The Lords' win moves the team to its second straight Sweet 16 appearance.

In a highly contested match, both teams had their opportunities in the first half. The Saints had a pair of shots on goal as did the Lords but neither found the net.

Both teams attempted four shots in the first 45 minutes.

Kenyon appeared primed to break the scoreless tie early in the second half as five shots came in striking distance of the Saints' goal in the first five minutes. Woo Jeon had the best attempt but his header sailed just left of the post.

TMC's Christopher Lehan provided a little pressure to Clougher in the 73rd minute, but the keeper stopped the header attempt.

Nate Petrou's last-gasp effort with just under 12 seconds left in the half sailed just right sending the match into overtime.

In the first overtime period, TMC goalie Matt Kees stopped Kenyon's best shot up to that point from Jeon in the 95th minute. Clougher notched another save nearly five minutes later moving the contest to the second overtime.

Thomas More looked to have scored the game-winning goal as the clock expired in the next overtime session, but the officials blew off the goal as the shot came after time hit 0:00.
In the penalty kick shootout, Kenyon dominated.

Petrou started for the Lords and found the back-right corner of the net. After Clougher denied Lehan in the next  PK, Tony Amolo delivered to put the Lords up 2-0. Clougher followed that up with another save, this time on an attempt from Brian Runyon. Kenyon's final PK conversion came from Jeremiah Barnes. Then, staying true to form, Clougher halted any hope of a Thomas More comeback stopping Tim Knauer.

Clougher recorded six saves in the shutout which was his 15th of the season.

The Lords will face off against a familiar foe November 22 in the NCAA Tournament: Ohio Wesleyan University. Kenyon defeated OWU 2-1 in overtime November 8 for the NCAC Tournament title.
