ERIE, Pa. – Senior
Lauren Kriete provided enough offense in Sunday's defensive struggle to power the Kenyon College women's basketball team to a 57-39 win over the Penn State-Behrend Lions. The game was the second and final contest for the Ladies (1-1) in the weekend's four-team Penn State-Behrend Tip-Off Tournament.
Kriete, a 5-11 forward, shot 8-of-12 from the floor to net a game-high 20 points. She was 4-of-6 on three-pointers and stuffed the rest of her stat line with a team-high eight rebounds, five steals, and two blocked shots. Fellow senior,
Sarah Hobbs, who posted a double-double in Saturday's game, added ten points in the Ladies' win and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
At the other end of the floor, the Kenyon defense suffocated the Lions, holding them to just a 13-of-45 shooting performance (28.9 percent). The Ladies forced 22 turnovers and came away with 11 steals and four blocked shots.
Penn State-Behrend (0-2) started the game with a three-pointer from Maggie Lawrence, but that would be the Lions' only lead of the game. Twenty-four seconds later, Kriete nailed her first three-ball to tie the game and Hobbs followed with another from long distance, giving Kenyon a 6-3 lead. The Ladies went on to lead by as many as 12 points in the first half before settling on a 27-18 advantage at the break.
The second half was more of the same. Penn State-Behrend moved within five points at one point, but a 9-0 Kenyon run all but put the game away. During the run,
Bailey Dominguez canned a three-pointer,
Griffin Tullis converted two layups, and
Sidney Cera knocked down a jumper.
Kenyon closed out the game on another 9-0 run to build its largest lead of the afternoon. Kriete had four points in that final spurt. Cera added two more and Hobbs finished off the game with another three-pointer. Overall, the Ladies were 9-of-25 (36.0 percent) from behind the three-point arc.
The busy start to the season continues Wednesday when the Ladies travel to Ada, Ohio to play the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears in a non-conference contest at 7:30 p.m.
Senior Lauren Kriete rang up 20 points in the Ladies' 57-39 win at Penn State-Behrend.
