NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Kenyon College (3-6) dropped a heartbreaker at the buzzer Monday afternoon to the College of St. Scholastica (1-6) in the Basketball Destinations Music City Classic at the Trojan Fieldhouse on the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
With 3.7 seconds left, Mariah Hovick drove the length of the court after a missed free throw and saw her jumper from the free throw line swish through to give the Saints a 43-42 win.
Hovick led all scorers with 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow added 10 points and two steals. No other player had more than three points for the Saints.
Bailey Dominguez led the charge for the Ladies scoring 11 points including hitting a trio of three-pointers.
Ifeoma Archimalo came off the bench to tally 10 points and grab five rebounds.
Offense, or lack thereof, was the story line in the game.
Neither team got into an offensive rhythm in the first half as Kenyon shot 28% from the field while St. Scholastica hit 27.8%.
Leading 12-9 with just over nine minutes left in the half, the Ladies went on a 8-2 run to take control. Kenyon capped off the run with a three-pointer from Dominguez to give the visitors from Gambier its biggest lead (20-11).
The Ladies maintained that lead all the way up to the 3:27 mark in the second half before Hovick hit two free throws which tied the game at 37.
Dominguez struck again from deep on the next Kenyon possession to bring the score to 40-37. The Ladies' lead grew to five (42-37) with 80 seconds left before St. Scholastica rallied.
Hovick hit back-to-back layups and Kenyon missed a pair of free throws down the stretch to give St. Scholastica hope. After the second missed free throw, Hovick corralled the rebound and drove all the way down for the game-winning shot.
Kenyon was held to its lowest point total of the season. They also shot its second-lowest field goal percentage total (28.9%) in the loss and were 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the free throw line.
The Ladies will look to bounce back tomorrow at 7 p.m. when they play Luther College (8-1).
