Connolly sets career high, but Kenyon falls at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio – J.J. Woodson led four Hiram College (6-1, 1-1 NCAC) players in double-figure scoring as the Terriers won a hard-fought game over the Kenyon College Lords (2-4, 1-2 NCAC) 76-69 Saturday afternoon at Price Gym in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest.

Woodson scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Kyle Deckerd added 13 points and three assists while Austen Rekolt and Joe Zoltowski each chipped in with 11 points and four assists.

Tim Connolly continued his early-season scoring onslaught totaling a career-high 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting including hitting four 3-pointers and adding seven free throws. Cooper Handelsman chipped in with 12 points while Brien Comey added 11 points and five rebounds.

After an early tussle between the two squads, Hiram found itself leading Kenyon 18-13 with a little over 11 minutes remaining in the half. The Terriers followed with a 13-4 run and got its biggest lead of the half (31-17) following an and-one conversion by Ray Gaston with 7:21 left.

The Lords chipped away at that deficit the remainder of the half before going to the locker room down 37-34. Connolly led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 10 points.

Eight seconds into the second half, Connolly scored a layup to cut the deficit to one (37-36). Hiram maintained the lead though until the Lords threatened again. Jonathan Amador's three-pointer with 13:42 left in the contest brought the score to 48-47, but the Terriers didn't relinquish the lead.

Hiram held on and went up as many as 12 points (70-58) thwarting any Kenyon comeback attempt.

The Terriers got a big boost from their bench as they outscored the Lords 26-8. Kenyon shot 46.2% (6-of-13) from beyond the arc but did leave a few points at the free throw line shooting 17-of-27 for a 63% clip.

Kenyon returns to action December 9 at Allegheny College (5-3, 2-0 NCAC) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
