Cera hits career mark, Ladies win conference opener

HIRAM, Ohio – Kenyon College sophomore guard Sidney Cera scored a career-high 17 points Saturday and led the Ladies basketball team to a 62-49 victory over the host Hiram College Terriers. The game was the North Coast Athletic Conference season opener for Kenyon.

Cera scored her 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, which included one three-pointer, and 4-of-6 shooting at the free throw line. Her previous single-game best was 16 points at Allegheny College last season. In addition to her scoring output against the Terriers, Cera contributed four assists, three rebounds, and a steal.

Sarah Hobbs, a senior guard, also had a big game for the Ladies as she racked up 11 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also managed three assists and a pair of steals.

Sophomores Bailey Dominguez and Miranda Diesz both scored seven points for Kenyon and Charlotte Bussema rang up six.

Kenyon (3-4, 1-0 NCAC) fell behind early because Hiram's Kayla Yost scored six points within the first five minutes and carried the Terriers to leads of 6-2 and 8-4. At the 14-minute mark, Diesz canned a three-pointer for the Ladies and one minute later added a layup to give Kenyon a 9-8 advantage. Following that bucket, the Ladies never trailed again.

Both Cera and Hobbs had eight points in the first half of play and helped give Kenyon a comfortable 34-19 lead at halftime. The lead expanded in the second half as the Ladies went up by as many as 22 points after Cera drilled a three-pointer with 11:19 left on the clock.

On the defensive front, Kenyon forced Hiram into 21 turnovers and scored 24 points off those Terrier miscues. The Ladies also held Hiram to 5-of-21 shooting (23.8 percent) in the first half and 16-of-45 shooting (35.6 percent) overall.

Hiram (2-5, 0-2 NCAC) never got closer than nine points during second-half action. Yost ended up leading all players with 18 points, while Kelsey Koskinen chipped in with 11.

The Ladies have one more game before winter break. They'll head to Meadville, Pennsylvania for a Wednesday evening conference game at Allegheny College.
