WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team's 69-45 Saturday afternoon win at The College of Wooster locked the Ladies into the fourth seed for the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference postseason tournament. That fourth seed comes with a first-round home game, one that will see the Ladies battle Wittenberg University on Tuesday evening.
Kenyon (15-9, 10-6 NCAC) will host a first-round NCAC tournament game for the tenth straight season. The Ladies have already faced Wittenberg (14-10, 9-7 NCAC) twice this season, losing on the Tigers' court 61-47 and bouncing back for a 74-59 win at Tomsich Arena just three days ago.
Before the Ladies could even start to think about the postseason, they had to put away the Wooster Fighting Scots and they did so with the senior combo of
Maggie Boelter and
Maureen Hirt. Boelter went 5-of-8 from three-point range to post a game-high 15 points. That output was accompanied by five rebounds and her second straight game with nine assists. She now has 95 helpers on the season. Meanwhile, Hirt pumped in another 13 points and inched closer to the Ladies' all-time scoring mark of 1,794 points set by Kim Graf '97. Hirt will enter Tuesday's postseason game against Wittenberg with 1,778 career points.
Kenyon also received seven points from freshman
Sidney Cera and six points apiece from
Avery Anderson,
Meredith Williams,
Lauren Kriete, and
Sarah Hobbs.
As a team, the Ladies' trend of accurate shooting from long distance continued. With Boelter leading the way, the Ladies were 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) at Wooster. That marked the fourth time in the past six games that the Kenyon women shot 50 percent or better from beyond the three-point arc.
Kenyon never trailed in this game. While the offense was doing its thing, the defense didn't give Wooster a chance. The Ladies forced 23 turnovers and held the Fighting Scots to a 15-of-51 shooting performance (29.4 percent).
The Ladies' massive lead, which blew up to as many as 38 points, allowed the bench players to log more minutes and they responded with a total of 23 points. In all, 14 different Ladies played and a dozen registered points.
