GREENCASTLE, Ind. – For the tenth straight season, the Kenyon College women's basketball team made it to the semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference postseason tournament. That, however, was the end of the line for the Ladies, who saw their 2013-14 season come to a close with Friday night's 88-60 loss to the No. 4-ranked DePauw University Tigers.
The defeat finalized the Kenyon women's overall record at 16-10. DePauw, the tournament's top seed, is now 26-1and moves on to Saturday's NCAC Championship game to face Denison University, a 67-57 winner over Ohio Wesleyan University in the evening's other semifinal game.
The Ladies managed to hang with DePauw for most of the game, but a ten-minute stretch late in the first half made all the difference. During that time, DePauw went from trailing by two points to leading by 16. The Tigers rattled off 11 straight points to start their run. Kenyon then got a field goal from
Meredith Williams to make it 29-22, but DePauw answered with eight more consecutive points and entered halftime with a 40-24 advantage.
In the second half, Kenyon senior
Maureen Hirt took over and helped keep the Ladies in the game. After being held scoreless in the first half, Hirt erupted for 20 points over the final 15 minutes of her collegiate career. She shot 6-of-9 in the half and added to her Kenyon career scoring record, which now stands at 1,819 points. Additionally, Hirt drained all five of her free throw attempts, running her streak to 30 straight and giving her an excellent shot at being NCAA Division III's most accurate free throw shooter for the second consecutive season. On top of her scoring mark, Hirt will graduate as Kenyon's all-time career leader in field goals made (625), three-point field goal percentage (.396), and free throw percentage (.896).
Hirt was not on her own against the powerful Tigers. Fellow senior
Maggie Boelter also closed out her career with a bang. She converted 5-of-7 three-point attempts, scored 15 points, and served up five assists. She finished her season shooting 40.5 percent (64-of-158) from long range. She also finished with 109 assists, a total that ranks second only to her single-season record of 121 assists set last season. For her career, Boelter ended up with 354 assists, the third-best total in program history.
Despite the strong play from its seniors, Kenyon never got closer than 14 points in the second half.  Junior
Lauren Kriete added seven points and five rebounds to the Ladies' totals, while Williams wrapped things up with six points and four assists.
The Tigers took advantage of the Ladies' lack of size and dominated the glass, outrebounding Kenyon 46-20. Alison Stephens grabbed 14 boards for the Tigers and Alex Gassaway, who had 17 points, snared another ten rebounds. Savannah Trees poured in 23 points to lead all scorers. Ali Ross had 12 points and Emma Ondik added 11.
