the freshman from Solon, Ohio.GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College football team was held scoreless as DePauw University claimed a 24-0 win Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference tilt at Blackstock Stadium.
It was the first time the Lords were shutout since September 1, 2012 in the season opener at Bluffton.
The Lords' first possession of the game saw a nine-play drive that got all the way to the DePauw 42-yard line before a fourth-down incompletion from
Jake Bates to
Jake Genachowski ended the drive.
On the ensuing possession for the Tigers, running back Amen Galley had six carries on a 10-play drive for 37 yards and a two-yard touchdown run. DePauw led 7-0 with 7:04 left in the quarter.
Kenyon's next offensive possession got all the way to the Tigers' 30-yard line, but a fumble on second down was recovered by DePauw's Peter Nelson, ending the Lords' scoring chance.
Kenyon had four more series on offense the rest of the first half, but did not manage to cross into Tigers' territory.
DePauw extended its lead to 14-0 with a 10-play, 55-yard drive capped off by a Jack Hagen six-yard touchdown catch from Matt Hunt.
In the third quarter, the Tigers added their final touchdown of the game on a Jack Gruber 19-yard run with 6:32 left.
Trailing 21-0, the Lords put together their best drive before a miscue in the red zone. Kenyon went on an 11-play, 76-yard drive highlighted by a pair of Bates passes to
Brian Hunca and runs from
Blake Calcei. Unfortunately, on Calcei's third carry of the drive, he was stripped of the ball at the DePauw five-yard line and Thomas Gray recovered for the Tigers.
DePauw added a field goal from Marko Adams with just less than 10 minutes left in the game to cap off the scoring.
Calcei led the Lords' ground attack carrying nine times for 42 yards. Hunca and
Ian Bell combined for 11 catches for 72 yards through the air.
Defensively,
Jack McDonald and
Saxon Justice each had sacks while
Brandon Byrd racked up a team-high 12 tackles, 10 of which were solo.
Kenyon is off next week but will look to get in the win column October 11 when they visit Hiram College for a 1 p.m. game.
