Freshman Shannon Hart scored the first goal of
the game during the Ladies' 3-1 home loss to
Denison on Saturday. It was Hart's third goal
of the season. GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team scored the first goal of Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference game at McBride Field. The visiting Denison University Big Red, a team that showed virtually no offense in the first half, countered with three second-half goals and walked away with a 3-1 win.
With Kenyon holding that 1-0 lead for the first 38 minutes of play, the game took a severe turn when Denison's Abby Martone scored off a penalty corner sent in by Molly Chapman. Within the next eight minutes of play, the Big Red scored two more times, both coming off the stick of Chloe Dikeou.
The Big Red (5-3, 5-1 NCAC) were out-shot 15-4 in the first half of play, but quickly turned the tables in the second half and out-shot Kenyon, 10-2.
The loss ended a win streak of five games for the Ladies (7-2, 4-1 NCAC), who also suffered their first conference loss of the season.
The Ladies' lone goal occurred with 13:37 showing on the first-half clock. On a play that developed off a penalty corner, senior
Sammy Johnston fired a shot for Kenyon. The ball hit a Denison defender and rolled to freshman
Shannon Hart. Hart then collected the deflection and snuck her shot just inside the right post. It was her third goal of the season.
Kenyon has little time to dwell on the loss. The Ladies will hit the road tomorrow for another NCAC contest. This time they'll take on the Oberlin College Yeowomen beginning at noon.Â
