Maggie Smith scored within the first six minutes
of Saturday's game. The goal, her second of the
season, held up as the game-winner.GREENCASTLE, Ind. – It took just five-and-a-half minutes for the Kenyon College women's soccer team to score a goal Saturday at DePauw University. As it turned out, that's all that was needed for the Ladies to gain a 1-0 win and defeat DePauw for the first time since the 2011 season.
The Ladies' goal came off the foot of sophomore
Maggie Smith, who was assisted by junior defender
Marie Laube. The goal was Smith's second of the season and the assist was Laube's first.
Although Kenyon scored early, the Ladies never let their foot off the gas. They went on to out-shoot the host Tigers 5-2 in the first half and 8-4 in the second half. Only two of DePauw's six shots were on goal, meaning Kenyon junior goalkeeper
Alissa Poolpol only had to convert two saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
DePauw goalkeeper Sarah Cho faced eight shots on goal (13 overall) and steered aside all but the one from Smith early in the contest.
The victory moved the Ladies' record to 4-5-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The loss left the Tigers limping with a 2-5-1 overall record and a 0-1-1 mark in conference play.
The Ladies' win also snapped a brief two-game losing skid and gives the team an opportunity to start a new streak in the other direction. It can do so Thursday with a non-conference win at Case Western Reserve University. That game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at Disanto Field.
