GAMBIER, Ohio – Wabash College (11-4, 6-2 NCAC) squeezed by Kenyon College (5-10, 3-5 NCAC) 60-56 Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Tomsich Arena.
The Little Giants were led by Daniel Purvlicis who scored a game-high 17 points and corralled eight rebounds. Daniel Scofield totaled 10 points and 13 rebounds while Kyle Aiton contributed 15 points to round out Wabash's double-figure scoring efforts.
Alexander Powell was the Lords' top scorer in the contest as he tallied a season-best 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Tim Connolly added 13 points and three steals while
Brien Comey recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards.
Through the first 10 minutes of the game, neither team held a lead greater than three points.
Leading 18-16 with 5:32 left in the half, Wabash put together a small run to go up seven, the largest lead of the half. Marcus Kammrath started the 7-2 run with a layup and it was later capped off by an and-one opportunity for Purvlicis. The Little Giants took a 28-23 lead into the break.
Three-and-a-half minutes into the second half Kenyon battled back to take a 30-28 lead after Connolly converted a three-point play.
Over the next 12 minutes, the tight contest saw each team hold several leads.
But with 5:46 left in the game, it was the Little Giants who came up with the game-changing run.
Leading 51-50, Wabash scored the next six points highlighted by Austin Burton's three-pointer after a Kenyon turnover to put the visitors up seven points (57-50).
The Lords pulled to within three points (59-56) after a Connolly three-pointer with 15 seconds left but didn't get any closer as the Little Giants prevailed.
There were 11 ties and 10 lead changes during the game.
Wabash's bench outscored Kenyon's 12-4 and held a 32-28 points in the paint advantage.
Kenyon will try and rebound January 21 when they travel to Wittenberg University (4-10, 2-5 NCAC) for a 7:30 p.m. game.
