GAMBIER, Ohio –
John Bray's 20 points and
Brien Comey's season-best 17 points lifted Kenyon College (6-11, 4-6 NCAC) to an 85-74 win over Hiram College (9-8, 3-7 NCAC) Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference basketball game at Tomsich Arena.
The duo combined to hit 15-of-23 shots and grab 12 rebounds for the Lords who whipped the Terriers in the paint scoring 46.
Tim Connolly chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals while
Cooper Handelsman added 10 points.
Ethan Shapiro tallied his season-best points total with eight.
J.J. Woodson was superb for the Terriers scoring a game-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Kelvin Jones and Jeremiah Thomas scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to round out Hiram's double-figure scoring efforts.
It was a tight affair a little over six minutes into the contest as the Lords held a 10-8 lead following a Hiram layup. But after trading punches early, Kenyon went on a massive run to seize control of the game.
From the 13:58 mark of the first half to the 7:43 mark, the Lords reeled off a 17-0 run to go up 27-8. Six different players scored for Kenyon led by
Jonathan Amador's five points. The Terriers missed eight shots and turned the ball over three times during that stretch.
Kenyon's offense was solid in the first half shooting 51.6% from the field and 11-of-12 (91.7%) at the free throw line. The Terriers opened the game shooting just 3-of-14 (21.4%) as the Lords took a 45-33 lead into the break.
The Terriers started the second half strong cutting the double-digit deficit down to eight (47-39) following a Jones layup with 18:43 remaining.
But Kenyon weathered that storm and followed with a 16-3 run to go up its biggest margin (63-42) with just under 13 minutes left.
Hiram never got any closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The Lords are back in action January 27 when the travel to face the Oberlin College (7-10, 3-7 NCAC) Yeoman at 8 p.m. Kenyon defeated Oberlin 65-45 back on December 3.
