Woo Jeon scored twice in the second half as Kenyon blanked rival Denison 3-0 at Mavec Field.GAMBIER, Ohio – In front of a packed home crowd, the nationally-ranked Kenyon College soccer team ran all over Denison University to the tune of a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference match at Mavec Field. What was thought to be a highly competitive match leading into the contest, turned out to be just the opposite.
Â
Tony Amolo scored once while
Woo Jeon added a pair of goals to help the Lords offensively. Kenyon's defense was outstanding throughout the day as well limiting Denison to a season-low four shots, none of which were on goal.
Â
Through the first 19 minutes, Kenyon had a pair of looks on Denison goalie Blake Schach but neither attempt from Amolo and Jeon came through.
Â
The scoreless tie then changed in Kenyon's favor at the 20-minute mark. With defender
Billy O'Neill inside the box along the right side, he passed to Amolo who did the rest. It was Amolo's 12th goal of the year.
Â
Kenyon's 1-0 lead held the rest of the first while the defense didn't allow a single Denison shot.
Â
Second-half action brought a pair of Big Red shots from Thomas Vondrak and Will Kendall in the 67th and 69th minutes, respectively, but Kenyon was in good position on both attempts to block the shots.
Â
Just four minutes after those attempts, Kenyon struck again. With midfielder
Josh Lee possessing the ball in the middle of the field, he found a streaking Jeon who finished along the right side for the match's second goal.
Â
One more insurance goal was added for the Lords as freshman
Brice Koval dribbled down the baseline and found Jeon who finished into the right corner for the final tally.
Â
The Lords out-shot the Big Red 15-4 and held a 6-4 corner kicks advantage. Keeper
Sam Clougher recorded his 31st career shutout which pulls him one step closer to the all-time record of 32 set by Marshall Chapin '94.
Â
Next up for Kenyon is a trip to Hiram College on October 20. Â
