Ladies win thriller in double-overtime over Denison

Maggie Smith scored her team best fourth game-winner of the year on Saturday as the Ladies
knocked off rival Denison 1-0 in double overtime on Senior Day.

GAMBIER, Ohio – Maggie Smith fired from just outside the 18-yard box and found the game-winning goal as the Kenyon Ladies soccer team won on Senior Day  against rival Denison University in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

With Gillian Blackwell navigating the right side, she passed to a wide open Smith who scored the golden goal in the second overtime.  It was her team-leading fourth game-winner of the season.

For the team, it was Kenyon's 10th win of the year and the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons that the Ladies' program has attained double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons.

First-half action saw the Big Red get two looks against Ladies senior keeper Alissa Poolpol in the 13th and 26th minutes but neither rang true for the visitors.

The Ladies had a couple of good looks as well in the first period. Campbell Fee's attempt in the 17th minute was near perfect but it hit the left post. Smith fired one of her six shots in the 40th minute but Denison's Jenny Herold stopped the attempt.

In the second half, the opportunities were less for both teams as they combined to shoot just five times. Herold had a pair of saves for the Big Red in the second period.

With the score tied at 0-0 after regulation, the rivals went to the first overtime.

Following a Blackwell corner, senior Olivia Lloyd headed a shot that just missed going in as is deflected off the top crossbar.

Denison had a chance at victory when Jacquie Graham fired along the left side but a diving save from Poolpol helped push the game to the second overtime.

Finally, in the 103rd minute, Smith delivered to give the Ladies an important NCAC win. Kenyon is currently third in the conference standings with three matches left in the regular season. To qualify for the NCAC Tournament, teams must be in the top four.

Next up for the Ladies, who have now won three in a row, is a trip to Oberlin College Oct. 21 with start time at 7:30 p.m.
