GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College (10-11, 1-6 NCAC) earned its first sweep of a North Coast Athletic Conference opponent for the first time in a little over two years on Saturday as the Ladies won 3-0 over the visiting Allegheny College Gators. The last time Kenyon won in straight sets was over Allegheny on Oct. 19, 2013. The victory also marked the first time since 2011 that Kenyon attained double-digit wins in a season.
Leading the way for the Kenyon offense with a match-high 10 kills were
Tierney McClure and
Delaney Swanson. McClure also added a pair of blocks while Swanson collected 12 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.
Jensen Shurbert dished out a match-high 30 assists while
Rachael Thorson collected 14 digs.
As a team, Kenyon hit .284 which was its highest attack percentage in conference play. Meanwhile, Allegheny connected on just .045 of its attempts.
With a four-point lead (8-4) early in set one, the Ladies pulled away with a 7-2 run as Swanson had a pair of kills which put the home team up 15-6. Kenyon reeled off a few more points and gained a 20-7 advantage after a kill by
Lauren Kerr. The final count in the opening set was 25-10 Kenyon.
The Gators opened set two with an 11-4 advantage following a block assist from Taylor Samuel and Leah Franzluebbers. But after that, Kenyon fought back. An 8-1 run capped off by a Swanson kill tied the set at 12. Both teams went back and forth after that until late in the set. With a slim one-point lead (20-19), the Ladies closed set two with a 5-0 run and prevailed 25-19.
Set three brought a 4-1 lead early to the Gators, but the Ladies didn't panic and went on a huge stretch to put the game away. Kenyon hit a 15-2 run and went up 10 (16-6) following
Alexi Donnelly's kill. Allegheny never recovered and the Ladies went on to win 25-12.
Kenyon will look to keep its good play going October 27 when they visit the College of Wooster for a 7 p.m. conference match.
