Breschi scores twice, Ladies blank Quakers

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team continued Sunday its dominance of the Earlham College Quakers. Two goals from senior Maddie Breschi propelled the Ladies to a 4-0 win, the team's 25th straight victory over the Quakers.

Kenyon, now 14-2 overall and 11-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, last lost to the Quakers on October 5, 2003. Dating back to their initial meeting in 1981, the Ladies are 48-10-2 all-time against Earlham.

Sunday, Breschi scored once in each half and both goals came off penalty corners. In the first half, she blasted a shot from the top of the circle off an assist from fellow senior Christine Bloom. In the second half, the shot was nearly identical, but the pass came from Hannah Drake, another senior. The two goals were Breschi's team-best 13th and 14th of the season. She also leads the team with six assists and 34 points.

Kenyon's other two goals were registered by sophomore Shannon Hart and sophomore Katelyn Hutchinson. Hart led off the scoring with an unassisted goal in the game's seventh minute. It was her tenth goal of the season and her second game-winner.

Seven minutes before halftime, Hutchinson knocked in her goal. She gained control of a loose ball and scored through a scrum in front of the Quakers' cage. The goal was Hutchinson's seventh of the season.

At the other end of the field, Kenyon's defense allowed just one Earlham shot in the first half and nine for the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Speroff survived 11 Earlham penalty corners, made seven saves and chalked up her tenth shutout of the season, two shy of the Kenyon single-season record.

Kenyon has two more games left in its regular-season schedule. The Ladies will travel to Granville, Ohio on Saturday to take on Denison University and then return home Sunday for the finale with Oberlin College.
