Ladies' big second half spurs win over Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Kenyon College (15-2, 12-1 NCAC) moved closer to securing the top seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament which will take place next week after its 4-1 triumph over rival Denison University Saturday morning at Piper Stadium.

After being shut out in the first half, the
Ladies had an impressive second half in which they tallied four goals.

The Big Red (12-7, 10-4 NCAC) out-shot the Ladies 5-3 in the opening half and found the first goal of the contest in the 13th minute. Lucy Pearsall took a shot and watched
as it tipped off Elsie Humes's stick into the back of the pipes.

After spotting Denison a 1-0 lead, the Kenyon defense clamped down the rest of the way. Sophomore Sarah Speroff denied three shots the rest of the first half while senior defender Morgen Barrosso came up with a defensive save in the 20th minute after another Humes shot.

The 1-0 score held the remainder of the first half despite on-goal attempts from Abbey Roswell and Weezie Foster in the 16th minute.

Second-half action was all for the visitors who struck early. Just four minutes in, Shannon Hart received a pass in front of the cage from Maddie Breschi and fired her 11th goal of the year.

With the game tied at 1, Kenyon took the lead for good in the 47th minute. Following a penalty corner, Breschi dribbled, got free and fired from seven yards away to move the Ladies ahead 2-1.

Denison never responded.

Three minutes after the go-ahead goal, Hannah Drake was able to find her first goal of the season and extend Kenyon's lead to 3-1.

The big second half was capped off from Katelyn Hutchinson in the 53rd minute. Her eighth score of the year came after she controlled a  loose ball and fired in front of the cage.

Denison had several opportunities in the second half to add another goal but couldn't find any. Tori Rapillo had an attempt in the 59th minute and Humes shot in the 60th but Speroff stopped both.

Allie Bacon had the final on-goal shot with less than five minutes left, but once again, Speroff thwarted the attempt. She recorded eight saves in the contest,  which tied her season high.

Kenyon will close its regular season tomorrow at noon when they face Oberlin College at McBride Field. The Ladies defeated the Yeowomen earlier in the season by a 6-0 count.
