DePauw’s potent offense conquers Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio – The DePauw University Tigers' potent offense stole the show Saturday at McBride Field. Neither the rainy conditions nor the Kenyon College defense could do much to slow down the Tigers, who remained undefeated after chalking up a 38-16 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the host Lords.

DePauw (4-0, 3-0 NCAC) scored on six of its first seven possessions and racked up 474 yards of total offense. Entering Saturday's game, the Tigers averaged 49.0 points and 505.3 yards per game. On the other side of the field, Kenyon (2-3, 2-2 NCAC) couldn't get its run game going and played catch-up for most of the contest.

The Lords did jump out to a great start. A Nick LaPoint sack of quarterback Matt Hunt began the game and the Tigers' offense went three-and-out. Kenyon then took over and marched down the field, ending a 17-play drive with a 24-yard Szabi Simo field goal and a 3-0 lead.

DePauw then capitalized on a couple of Kenyon penalties and went the other way, finishing off a drive with Hunt scramble for 17 yards to pay dirt. The Tigers' drive was kept alive when Kenyon was flagged for roughing the kicker on a 4th-and-15 situation.

In the second quarter, DePauw scored on all three of its possessions. The first tally was a 12-yard touchdown toss from Hunt to Chase Sadler. A 34-yard field goal from Marko Adams was next and then a one-yard touchdown run from Amen Galley got DePauw into the break with a 24-3 advantage.

Kenyon's leading rusher, senior Blake Calcei, was a bit dinged up and didn't play much. When he did get the ball early in the game he managed just seven yards on six carries. When he left the game, no one picked up the slack. Quarterback Jake Bates ended up being the team's leading rusher with 45 yards on 16 runs. Freshman Rob Meagher added 14 yards on eight carries and the Lords, as a team, managed only 2.3 yards per rush.

Galley scored another rushing touchdown on DePauw's first possession of the third quarter. That pushed the Tigers' lead out 31-3 and forced the Lords to go to the air. Three plays after the DePauw touchdown, Bates connected on a 79-yard touchdown pass with junior receiver Brian Hunca.

At the start of the fourth quarter those two hooked up again. This time a 42-yard pass and catch between Bates and Hunca set up a 10-yard touchdown toss between the same two. Hunca finished the game with five catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns, while Bates was 14-of-23 for 203 yards with the two touchdowns and one interception.

Hunt wound up 18-of-23 for 226 yards and the Tigers' ground game did the rest. Jason Kirchhoff led the way with 105 yards on 22 carries. Hunt racked up 76 yards on 13 carries and Galley rounded out the trio with 59 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Overall, DePauw had 248 rushing yards and 226 passing yards.

Defensively, Kenyon got a huge game from junior linebacker Saxon Justice, who recorded a game-high 22 tackles. Safety Curt Williams racked up 15 tackles, while Sam Weaver and Mike Gibbons each contributed eight stops.
