Ladies sink Muskies after fourth-quarter frenzy

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies had a slow start to the 2015-16 season, scoring 34 points through three quarters Tuesday night against the host Muskingum University Muskies. In the fourth quarter, however, the Ladies erupted for 32 points and rallied for a 66-62 win.

Kenyon (1-0) went into the final quarter of play trailing Muskingum 41-34. The Muskies added a bucket one minute into the quarter and moved ahead by nine points. At the 7:50 mark, the Ladies got their first field goal, a three-pointer from Bailey Dominguez, of the quarter. That ignited the Kenyon women who went on to finish off the game outscoring the Muskies 32-19.

Dominguez, a junior forward, scored 13 of her team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter. After her three-pointer, freshman post Lane Davis followed up with an old-fashioned three-point play and junior Miranda Diesz fired off another long-range bucket to bring the score to 51-43 with a little more than five minutes to play.

Kenyon kept pouring it on as sophomore Ifeoma Archimalo converted another three-point play, Diesz connected on a free throw and junior Sidney Cera buried a three-ball that put Kenyon ahead (52-51) for the first time since the five-minute mark of the first quarter. Bailey later added two free throws to complete a string of 14 consecutive Kenyon points.

Muskingum (0-1) was able to tie the game at 54-54, but Dominguez immediately replied with another trey to give the Ladies the lead for good. Over the final 40 seconds of play, Kenyon hit 9-of-12 free throws to seal the deal.

While the offense was ringing up points in the final frame, the Ladies defense forced five turnovers and held the Muskies to 36.8 percent shooting (7-of-19).

Dominguez finished the game 6-of-17 overall, including 4-of-10 from three-point range. She was 5-of-6 at the free throw line and also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, lifting the Ladies to a huge 54-39 advantage on the glass, as well as a 24-11 edge in second-chance points.

Cera was 7-of-8 at the line and added 13 points to the Ladies' total, while Diesz chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Ladies overcame a 9-of-37 (24.3 percent) shooting performance in the first half by shooting 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from long range and 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) at the line during second-half play.

Muskingum was pestered into a 20-of-67 (29.9 percent) shooting performance for the game. The Muskies were led by Olivia Besancon, a sophomore guard who logged a game-high 22 points.
