RICHMOND, Ind. – The Kenyon College Ladies worked the low post Friday night and overpowered the Olivet College Comets, 69-56, during first-round action in the four-team Earlham College Quaker Tournament.
Sophomore post
Ifeoma Archimalo and freshman post
Lane Davis combined for 22 points and helped improve the Ladies' early-season record to 2-0. The win also pushed Kenyon into the tournament's championship game, which will take place Saturday at 3 p.m. In that contest, the Ladies will take on the winner of Friday night's game pitting Dominican University against host Earlham College.
Davis was 3-for-4 from the floor and sank three free throws for nine points. Archimalo was 5-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-4 at the line for a team-high 13 points. The pair also combined for 13 rebounds, with Archimalo grabbing a game-high and career-best eight boards.
Archimalo made the first two baskets of the game and steered Kenyon to a quick 6-0 lead. Olivet started cutting into that margin and used a three-pointer from Jillian Nickels to move ahead (15-13) for the first time in the game. The teams battled back-and-forth until Kenyon closed out the second quarter with a mini 5-2 run that got the Ladies to intermission with a 31-30 advantage.
From that point, Kenyon never yielded the lead. Six different Ladies recorded points in the third quarter and Kenyon opened up an eight-point advantage. When junior
Bailey Dominguez buried her only three-pointer of the game, it gave Kenyon a 59-49 advantage with just under five minutes to play.
Down the stretch, Olivet drew as close as six points, but Archimalo rattled off five straight points to put things away. Davis also pitched in with five of her 14 points scored in the fourth quarter.
Archimalo and Davis both started the game, but didn't get much scoring assistance from the other three starters, who combined for just seven points, but did manage 12 rebounds and 12 assists, with eight of those assists coming from junior
Sidney Cera. The bench certainly picked up the scoring slack as it registered 35 points.
Miranda Diesz and
Charlotte Bussema led the way with eight points apiece, while freshmen
Jessica Gerber and
Hannah O'Day each added seven.
Kenyon powered through Olivet by taking high-percentage shots. The Ladies did not have a good night at the free throw line, but made up for it by shooting 48.0 percent from the floor (24-of-50). At the other end, the Comets limped through a 31.6 shooting percentage (18-of-57). Jackie Harwood drained four three-pointers for Olivet and was the Comets' leading scorer with 12 points.
Sophomore Ifeoma Archimalo helped guide Kenyon to a 69-56 win Friday night against the Olivet Comets.
Archimalo scored 13 points and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds in the win.
