LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Molly Rubin led a balanced Kenyon College attack Sunday and the Ladies basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season by defeating the Greensboro College Pride, 61-52, in the consolation contest of the two-day Transylvania University Pat Deacon Classic.
Rubin, a senior guard, put together her best game of the season, scoring 10 points, grabbing seven rebounds and serving up two assists. She was 3-of-4 overall, a perfect 2-of-2 from three-point range and 2-of-3 at the free throw stripe.
Sophomore
Griffin Tullis came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points for Kenyon (5-1) and sophomore post
Ifeoma Archimalo matched Rubin's seven rebounds, while scoring eight points. In all, nine different Kenyon players scored at least two points and a dozen different players grabbed at least one rebound to give the Ladies a 45-35 advantage on the glass.
Greensboro (1-3) held three early leads and claimed a 13-11 edge at the end of the first quarter when a layup from Da Jah Joyner found its mark. A three-pointer and a free throw from Rubin gave Kenyon a one-point lead and then her second three-pointer, which came at the 6:18 mark of the second quarter, gave the Ladies the lead for good.
Rubin's output sparked a 13-5 Kenyon run that got the Ladies to the break with a 28-21 lead. Freshman
Hannah O'Day drained another Kenyon three-ball in the run and was one of four Ladies who scored in those pivotal second-quarter moments.
The Kenyon lead ballooned to as many as 16 points in the third quarter as Greensboro scored just three field goals in the first eight minutes. The Ladies defense held the Pride to 4-of-12 shooting in that third quarter and also forced eight turnovers.
That got the Ladies to the fourth quarter with a comfortable 47-31 lead, but Greensboro was not waving the white flag. The Pride charged back to outscore the Ladies 21-14 in the final frame, but never got closer than seven points. Junior guard
Sidney Cera went 4-for-4 at the free throw line over the last 30 seconds to secure the Kenyon victory.
Overall, Kenyon forced 24 turnovers throughout the game and scored 15 points off of them.
Joyner wound up scoring a game-high 18 points for Greensboro and Marla Crawford added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Ladies now return home for their next game, a conference contest against Hiram College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Senior Molly Rubin had her best game of the season and led the Ladies to a 61-52 win over Greensboro College.
Rubin had ten points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists for Kenyon, which moved to 5-1.
