Tigers use turnovers to defeat Lords

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College football team committed too many turnovers Saturday and Wittenberg University took advantage of most of them as the Tigers defeated the Lords, 45-21, in Senior Day at McBride Field.

The North Coast Athletic Conference game marked the final appearance at home for Kenyon seniors Jake Bates, Blake Calcei, Nick LaPoint, Greg McIntosh, Alex Oles, Zack Estrela and Alex McQuiston.

The Tigers intercepted four Kenyon passes, converting two of them into scores. Kenyon also lost the ball on a botched punt attempt, leading to another Wittenberg score.

Bates, the Lords' quarterback, went 17-for-31 in the air for 226 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Six of his completions went to Brian Hunca, who had 136 receiving yards and caught both scores. Ian Bell had five catches for 45 yards. Greg McIntosh had three catches, and Calcei had two.

Calcei led the Lords in rushing with 55 yards on 14 carries. Rob Meagher had 31 yards on 10 attempts.

Wittenberg outgained Kenyon, 476-331. The Lords, however, managed 21 first downs, while the Tigers had 20.

Quarterback Zack Jenkins went 17-of-25 for 314 yards and four touchdowns for Wittenberg. Two of his touchdowns went to Luke Landis, and the other two went to Corey Stump.

Wittenberg (7-2, 6-2 NCAC) came out with a no-huddle offense, keeping the Lords (2-7, 2-6 NCAC) on their heels initially. The Tigers capitalized when Jenkins ran it in himself from 11 yards out to take an early 7-0 lead.

The Lords quickly responded. Bates found Hunca running a short hitch route on the left side. Hunca got away from his defender and sprinted 60 yards to tie the game at seven.

Early in the second, Jenkins put the Tigers back in the lead when he found Landis for an 11-yard touchdown.

The biggest play in the game happened when Kenyon mishandled a punt snap and Wittenberg got the ball at the Kenyon 41. Two plays later, Stump caught a pass from Jenkins and ran 19 yards to give the Tigers a 21-7 lead.

On the next drive, Bates threw an interception that was returned to the Kenyon 16, On a three-play drive, Sean Gary scored from eight yards out to make it 28-7.

In the second half, Kenyon re-established its ground game and drove 77 yards on nine plays. The drive was finalized when Hunca ran a fly pattern and caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Bates. The Lords' defense was then able to stop Wittenberg, but the Kenyon offense could come up with no response.

Instead, Wittenberg pulled away on touchdown passes to Landis and -- after another Kenyon pick -- to Stump for a 42-14 lead.

Kenyon wrapped up its scoring when Calcei scampered 16 yards early in the fourth for a touchdown.

Sam Appel relieved Bates during the fourth quarter and went 2-for-4 for five yards and an interception. He ran for 15 yards.

The Lords wrap up their 2015 campaign next Saturday at Denison University. That game kicks off at 1 p.m.
