DELAWARE, Ohio –
Sidney Cera's reverse layup with 2:37 left on the game clock broke a 63-63 tie and boosted the Kenyon College women's basketball team to a 72-64 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon at Branch Rickey Arena.
Griffin Tullis added a three-point play after Cera's field goal and the Ladies (6-4, 1-2 NCAC) secured victory with four free throws down the stretch. At the opposite side of the floor, the Battling Bishops (0-8, 0-3 NCAC) managed just four points during the game's final five minutes.
Kenyon got out to a good start, scoring on its first six possessions of the game and shooting 10-of-19 to build a 23-16 lead at the end of one quarter of play. That pace, however, dropped off quickly in a second quarter that saw the Ladies shoot just 4-of-15 and fall behind 33-32 at the half.
The game remained tight in the third quarter and the Ladies looked to pound the ball down low. Trailing 41-38, Kenyon starting feeding freshman post
Lane Davis, who poured in nine points during the quarter and helped push Kenyon to a 51-50 advantage heading into the final ten minutes of play.
Davis ended up leading a balanced Kenyon attack. She went 7-of-9 and scored a team-high 15 points. She was one of four players to ring up a double-digit scoring output for the Ladies. Junior
Miranda Diesz connected for a season-high 12 points and both
Bailey Dominguez and
Ifeoma Archimalo added 11.
Early in the fourth quarter neither team could create any significant breathing room. Ohio Wesleyan opened the frame with a three-pointer from Hanna Fedorka, but Kenyon responded with five straight points from Archimalo. The lead changed hands four more times before Ohio Wesleyan's Megan Kuether converted a three-point play to even things up at 63-63 and set the stage for Cera to give Kenyon the lead for good.
Kuether and Fedorka provided the bulk of the offensive production for the Battling Bishops. Kuether led all scorers with 23 points and Fedorka chipped in with 14. Ohio Wesleyan's other three starters accounted for the remainder of the team's points, as the Battling Bishops' bench was outscored 30-0 by Kenyon's bench.
Kenyon also built up a nice lead on the boards, outrebounding Ohio Wesleyan 38-29, and chalked up 20 second-chance points.
The win wraps up the calendar year for the Ladies, who will next be in action January 2 at Wilmington College to participate in the Quakers' two-day Fred Raizk Memorial Classic.
Freshman Lane Davis scored nine of her team-high 15 points in the third quarter Tuesday. Her play in the paint
helped Kenyon break open a close game and capture a 72-64 win at Ohio Wesleyan University.
