GAMBIER – Trailing by six with about 12:15 remaining, the Kenyon College Lords (3-4, 1-2 NCAC) went on a 17-3 run to seize control of the game against Allegheny College (2-7, 1-2 NCAC) and eventually prevailed by a 74-62 count Tuesday night in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Tomsich Arena.
Tim Connolly continued his hot start as he scored a career-high 32 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He hit five 3-pointers and was 11-of-11 at the free throw line. The senior also added six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore
Alexander Powell filled up the stat sheet as he tallied eight points, six rebounds and three assists. The Lords had four more players score at least five points in the contest. As a team, Kenyon was highly efficient cashing in on Gators turnovers. Allegheny coughed it up 12 times and Kenyon responded with 21 points.
First-half action saw the Lords quickly jump out to a 12-5 lead following Connolly's three-ball at the 16:11 mark. Kenyon led by as many as nine points (18-9) in the opening stanza after Powell converted a layup with 13:48 left.
But Allegheny shook off the slow start to pull within one at the break. Down by six points, back-to-back three-pointers from Brian Holland and Chris Koryak tied the game at 34 with under two minutes left. Kenyon added another three-pointer before two free throws by reserve forward Brandon Smith brought the tally to 37-36.
Early in the second half, a dunk by Chris Milon gave the Gators their first lead of the game (39-37) and after Kenyon scored on its next possession, Evan Schweitzer gave the visitors their second lead as he scored a jumper to bring the tally to 41-40.
The Gators used those buckets to spark their best run of the game and take a 49-43 lead after another Holland three-pointer.
Kenyon didn't panic though and transitioned from their zone coverage during Allegheny's run back to man-on-man. The switch paid huge dividends.
After falling behind by six, the home team regrouped and went on the game-clinching 17-3 run. The Gators hit just three free throws and missed all six of their shots during an 8:15 stretch. Kenyon was led by Connolly's eight points while freshman
Matt Shifrin added six during the run.
Next up for the Lords is trip to fourth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University December 19. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
