GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team had a strong output from their bench Wednesday night, but came up just short, suffering its second conference loss of the season by a 57-53 count to the Allegheny College Gators.
The Ladies (5-3, 0-2 NCAC) trailed for most of the night after the Gators started off the game on a 13-3 run. It was not until the fourth quarter that the Ladies were able to gain their first lead when
Jessica Gerber knocked down a three-point shot with 6:27 left to play.
The Gators were able to tie the game after a steal from Candaisy Crawford led to an uncontested layup at the 2:57 mark. Crawford made two free throws on the Gators' next possession and Allegheny (6-3, 2-0 NCAC) never relinquished the lead from that point.
Lane Davis later knocked down a free throw for Kenyon, but the Gators increased their lead by three with a jumper from Delaney Arbore at the 1:07 mark.
Kenyon turned the ball over twice in the last minute of action. However, after a steal, Davis was fouled with 13 seconds left to prevent the Ladies from shooting a three-pointer to tie the game. Davis made the first free throw and missed the second. The Ladies got the offensive rebound momentarily, but lost it out of bounds before they could attempt a game-tying field goal.
Kenyon's bench scored 30 of the team's 53 points. Davis scored eight of those points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the charge off the bench.
Miranda Diesz added nine points and six rebounds.
Bailey Dominguez led the starters with eight points.
Foul trouble was a significant issue for the Ladies throughout the game, as four players wound up with three or more.
Ifeyinwa Uwazie led the Gators offensively with 13 points and nine rebounds. Arbore added 13 points, Emma Pellicano scored 10 points, while Crawford and Jessica Mrdjenovich each had eight.
Next up, Kenyon plays two road contests against Case Western Reserve University and Ohio Wesleyan University on December 19 and 22, respectively. The Ladies will not return home until a NCAC matchup with DePauw University on January 9.
