CLEVELAND -- For three quarters, the Kenyon College and Case Western Reserve University women's basketball teams were locked in a tight non-conference contest Saturday at Horsburgh Gymnasium. In the fourth quarter, however, the host Spartans outscored the Ladies, 26-12, to claim a 62-51 victory.
Kenyon trailed 15-12 after one quarter and 29-26 at the half, but in the third quarter the Ladies' defense took control and pushed the Purple and White to a 39-36 advantage heading into the final ten minutes of play.
During that third quarter, Kenyon held Case to just seven points on 3-of-13 shooting (23.0 percent) and also forced the Spartans into five turnovers. Meanwhile, five different Ladies scored points in the quarter, which opened with a three-pointer from junior
Bailey Dominguez and closed with another three-ball from senior
Molly Rubin. In between,
Ifeoma Archimalo dropped in a pair of layups for Kenyon.
In the fourth, momentum switched sides and Case bombarded Kenyon with a run of three-pointers that changed the complexion of the game. Back-to-back threes from Kara Hageman and Alexis Amburgey gave Case a 42-39 edge. Kenyon got a couple of free throws from freshman
Jessica Gerber, but the Spartans responded with another three-pointer, this one from Hillary Hellmann, to extend the lead to four.
Hellmann pumped in another long ball later in the quarter and sparked a 15-8 run that covered the final three minutes of play and secured the win for the Spartans. Hellmann, who played the last seven minutes of the fourth quarter, scored a dozen points in that final frame and finished with a game-high 23 points. Overall, she was 7-of-12, including a 5-of-6 spree from beyond the arc. Laura Mummey added 16 points and combined with Hellmann to provide nearly 63 percent of the Spartans' offense.
Case's accuracy from long range and at the free throw line proved to be the difference. The Spartans shot 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from distance and 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) at the line. Kenyon was 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from three-point territory and struggled through a 4-of-15 showing (26.7 percent) at the free throw line.
Archimalo led all Kenyon scorers with ten points. Dominguez and freshman
Hannah O'Day each added eight points. Archimalo also logged a team-high eight rebounds, while
Lane Davis and
Miranda Diesz both grabbed seven.
The loss was Kenyon's third straight and dropped the Ladies' overall record to 5-4. On the flip side, Case has three straight wins and improved to 4-5.
