Amador, Bray key big win for Kenyon over Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Jonathan Amador and John Bray keyed a crucial 66-62 win for Kenyon College (7-15, 5-10 NCAC) over Denison University (13-9, 7-8 NCAC) Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference basketball game at Livingston Gym.

With the win, the Lords stayed alive to qualify for the NCAC Tournament which begins on February 25. The victory also signaled the first time since the 2008-09 campaign that the Lords swept the Big Red during the regular season.

Amador scored a season-high 21 points including hitting all six of Kenyon's three-point makes during the game. For Amador, it was the first time since the season opener a year ago against Otterbein University that he scored at least 20 points. Bray tallied 21 points as well while also grabbing eight rebounds which were a team high. Cooper Handelsman and Brien Comey each chipped in to score nine points and eight points, respectively.

Nearly three minutes into the game, Kenyon jumped out to an 11-2 lead after a Comey fast-break layup. The visitors from Gambier maintained a multiple-possession lead over most of the first half before the Big Red fought back.

Denison's Patrick Keller ignited a 13-5 run with a pair of free throws at the 14-minute mark and helped his team pull to within one point (20-19) with about six minutes left in the half. But the Lords countered with a run of their own down the stretch and went to the locker room ahead 34-25. Kenyon was aided by a 4-of-8 showing from three-point range while Denison went scoreless (0-for-6) from beyond the arc.

In the second half, the Lords saw their lead extend to as many as 17 points (53-36) following a free throw from Chris Link with 11:36 left.

The Big Red chipped away at the big deficit and found themselves down just two (64-62) with five seconds left after a David Meurer layup. Hoping for a little luck at the end, Denison fouled Handelsman but the senior from Pittsburgh drained two free throws for the final margin.

Kenyon shot 46.2% from three-point range in the win while also converting 12-of-16 (75%) from the free throw line.

The Lords' next contest comes February 14 when they host DePauw University at 3 p.m. for Senior Day. The Tigers defeated Kenyon 53-37 back on January 10 in a game which saw only 14 made shots for the Lords.
