GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team did everything in its power to hang with the No. 8-ranked DePauw University Tigers on Saturday at Tomsich Arena. The Tigers, however, pulled away late to chalk up a 64-51 victory and kept their North Coast Athletic Conference record unblemished.
DePauw (22-1, 15-0 NCAC) never really pulled away from Kenyon because the Ladies' defense did a consistently good job of pestering shooters. Overall, the Tigers, who entered the game shooting a conference best 46.9 percent, were held to a season-low 36.5 percent (23-of-63) by Kenyon.
On the other side of the court, the Ladies, who typically struggle with accurate shooting, sank 44.7 percent (21-of-47) against the Tigers. Coming into the game, the Ladies averaged 34.7 percent shooting.
A good portion of the Ladies' accuracy came from sophomore forward
Bailey Dominguez, who knocked down 6-of-9 shots, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Dominguez, who also had a couple of rebounds and an assist, finished with a game-high 17 points. Additional Kenyon scoring came from
Sarah Hobbs, who tallied nine, and
Lauren Kriete, who pumped in seven. Hobbs also contributed six rebounds and five assists.
While the Tigers were struggling with their shot, they were able to maintain the lead by feasting on Kenyon turnovers. The Ladies turned the ball over 20 times and DePauw flipped those miscues into 32 points, exactly half of its final output.
Emma Ondik led DePauw and tied Dominguez for the game-high with 17 points. Hannah Douglas added 15 for the Tigers, while both Savannah Trees and Lauren Adendroth scored 10. Abby Keller grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and helped DePauw post a slim 36-34 edge on the boards.
Kenyon (6-16, 4-10 NCAC) took an early 6-0 lead on Dominguez's first two three-pointers of the afternoon. The two teams traded the lead for the next few minutes, but when Douglas hit a layup at the 12:43 mark the Tigers had a lead they would not cede. Kenyon remained on the Tigers' heels, but DePauw got to the break with a deep three-pointer from Ondik and a 34-25 advantage.
The lead grew to 11 points early in the second half, but Kenyon used a trios of treys to knock the lead back down to four points at 40-36 with 15:53 remaining. The four-point margin would be as close as the Ladies would get the rest of the way. DePauw controlled the stretch run and achieved its largest lead of 14 points with just over a minute left to play.
Kenyon has two more games left in the regular season. The Ladies will entertain Wittenberg University on Wednesday night and then hold Senior Day festivities next Saturday before battling The College of Wooster.
Sophomore Bailey Dominguez connected on 6-of-9 shots, including 5-of-7 from three-point range, during the
Ladies' 64-51 loss to the No. 8-ranked DePauw University Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
