CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College Lords basketball team showed, once again, Saturday just how competitive it can be, even on the road. The Lords battled through foul trouble and dragged a tough Wabash College team into overtime before falling 68-67 at Chadwick Court.
The results marks the fifth time since January 31 that the Lords lost a contest by five points or less. This time, however, the Lords don't get another chance. The loss ends Kenyon's season with a 7-18 overall record and a 5-13 North Coast Athletic Conference record. Wabash, which will now move on to play in the conference tournament, used the victory to improve its records to 17-8 overall and 12-6 within the NCAC.
After a tight first half, the Little Giants led by as many as 10 points in the second half. With 4:18 left in regulation the home squad owned a 54-49 advantage. Kenyon senior
Cooper Handelsman then converted layups on consecutive Kenyon possessions to shrink the Wabash lead to one.
Down the stretch, the teams traded buckets. Kenyon junior
Connor Garrity hit a jumper with 51 seconds left to give Kenyon a 59-58 lead, but Wabash's Daniel Purvlicis made one-of-two free throws at the other end of the court to knot things at 59-59. Both team's had one more shot at winning the game and both teams misfired.
Kenyon, which piled up 28 personal fouls throughout the game, went into the extra session without frontcourt players
John Bray and
Brien Comey. They both fouled out of the game.
Jonathan Amador went into overtime with four fouls and so did
Phillip Crampton, who eventually fouled out, leaving Kenyon with virtually no post presence for the final 3:30 of the contest.
The Little Giants, who had one reserve player foul out of the game, capitalized on the situation and jumped out to leads of 64-59 and 67-63 in the overtime period. Kenyon got a couple of free throws from Garrity and Wabash got one from Zack Patton to make the score 68-65 in favor of Wabash.
With just four seconds remaining of the clock, Amadaor was fouled attempting a three-pointer. He sank the first two, but the third would not fall. Garrity was in the right place to rip down the rebound. He spun around and took a baseline jumper, but that would not fall either. Wabash grabbed the rebound as time expired.
Junior
Tim Connolly wound up leading Kenyon with 15 points. Amador went 3-of-6 from long range and rang up 13 points, while Handelsman scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out seven assists. Garrity had one of the better games of his injury-plagued season and put up eight points and eight rebounds.
Handelsman's seven assists gave him 108 on the season and 232 for his career. His single-season mark ranks fifth all-time at Kenyon.
Wabash was led by Kyle Aiton, who had 19 points, and Purvlicis, who scored 16.
