GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College senior
Avery Anderson racked up 13 points Saturday afternoon and directed the Ladies basketball team to a 71-51 victory over The College of Wooster Fighting Scots. Anderson, as well as her two classmates, was celebrating Senior Day and the final regular-season game of the season.
The Ladies (7-12, 5-11 NCAC) will now head into postseason play to face the Wittenberg University Tigers in the first round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Seedings and schedules for the NCAC Tournament have not yet been finalized because Wittenberg was supposed to play at Oberlin College on Saturday, but weather and road conditions prevented the game from being played. The two teams will try to play again Sunday at 1 p.m. The loss for Wooster ends the Fighting Scots' season with a 1-24 overall record and a 0-16 NCAC mark.
Anderson tallied her 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 shooting at the free throw line. Her final output was matched by freshman
Griffin Tullis, who also had six rebounds and five assists, and
Bailey Dominguez, who connected on a trio of three-pointers.
Kenyon's two other seniors,
Sarah Hobbs and
Lauren Kriete, scored nine and five points, respectively. Hobbs added a team-high seven rebounds and junior
Molly Rubin pumped in a season-high ten points.
Anderson scored nine of her 13 in the first half, setting the pace for Kenyon, which only trailed Wooster for about 30 seconds in the game's opening stages. The Fighting Scots hung around until Rubin netted five points on back-to-back Kenyon possessions. Her spurt gave the Ladies a 15-9 lead.
One minute later, Dominguez and Kriete canned back-to-back three-pointers to push Kenyon ahead, 21-11. From that point on Wooster never got closer than seven points for the rest of the game. The Ladies went into half with a 32-24 lead and forged ahead by as many as 21 points in the second half.
In typical fashion, the Kenyon defense smothered the Scots throughout the game. Wooster wound up with 18 turnovers and shot just 28.9 percent (13-of-45). Nineteen of the Scots' 51 points were scored at the free throw line. Kenyon also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Scots, 44-32.
On Senior Day at Tomsich Arena, Avery Anderson scored 13 points and steered the
Ladies basketball team to a 71-51 win over the Wooster Fighting Scots.
