Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Lords open season with 11-2 win over Crusaders

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords finally got a chance to start the 2015 lacrosse season Wednesday and they made the most of the opportunity, scoring four extra-man goals, playing solid defense, and routing the Capital University Crusaders, 11-2, in non-conference action at McBride Field.

Kenyon sophomore attack Robert Jacobs netted three of those four extra-man goals. His lone goal scored at even strength was a nifty behind-the-back flick that got the scoring started at the 11:02 mark of the first quarter. That goal came in transition and Jacobs was the beneficiary of an assist from classmate Cam Thomas.

Jacobs went on to score three more times, all in extra-man situations, to finish with a career-best four-point game. Before the first quarter came to a close, and after teammate J.T. Meyer pumped in a goal, Jacobs connected on his second score, one that would hold up as the game-winner. In addition to his four goals, Jacobs also scooped up seven groundballs and caused one turnover.

Meyer and Jacobs went back-to-back on the scoring chart once again in the second quarter and carried Kenyon into the break with a 5-0 lead.

The Lords really opened things up in the third quarter by tallying five more goals. Senior Pat Kim, who earlier in the game had an assist, fired in the first goal of the second half. He was followed up by two goals from Nick Lenard and one apiece from Jacobs and Meyer.

Capital had trouble both moving the ball and scoring against the Kenyon defense. The Crusaders were successful on just 14 of 21 clears, committed 32 turnovers, and didn't score their first goal until the 6:23 mark of the third quarter. By the time that goal was registered, Capital faced an 8-1 deficit.

The fourth quarter concluded with one extra-man goal from each team. Overall, the Lords were 4-of-6 in those man-up opportunities and they held Capital to just one extra-man goal on eight chances.

Kenyon wound up firing off 34 shots at Capital goalkeeper Cole Palmby, who made eight saves. At the other end of the field, the Crusaders unleashed 25 shots and Kenyon junior Patrick Shevelson also came away with eight saves.

Lenard matched Jacobs' four-point outpoint by scoring twice and assisting twice. Meyer finished with three goals, while Kim and sophomore Alex Lopez accounted for the other two Kenyon tallies.

The Lords have two days to recuperate before next hosting Hope College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
