GAMBIER, Ohio –
Nick Lenard and
Alex Lopez both scored three times Saturday and steered the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team to a 10-6 win over the visiting DePauw University Tigers. The game was the first North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the season for Kenyon and the win was the Lords' third straight over the Tigers since they began conference play in 2013.
The tempo of the game was slow throughout and the two teams combined for just three goals in each one of the first two quarters. Senior
Justin Coleman netted the first goal of the game for Kenyon at the 12:07 mark of the first quarter. About nine minutes later, Lopez fired in his first of three, pushing Kenyon ahead 2-0.
DePauw (3-4, 0-2 NCAC) managed to score once to end the first quarter and then tied things up with the first goal of the second quarter. Before the half, Kenyon got goals from Lopez and Lenard to build a 4-2 advantage.
Things opened up a bit in the third quarter, as the two teams alternated goals. DePauw scored four times in the frame, but was answered by Kenyon goals from Lopez,
Robert Jacobs, and
Fritz Waine. With one tick left on the clock, the Tigers registered the last goal of the quarter and moved into the fourth trailing Kenyon, 7-6.
Lenard and the Lords defense then took over the game as Kenyon outscored DePauw 3-0 in those final 15 minutes. Lenard, a senior, had a hand in all three of the goals. He scored the first two off assists from Jacobs and
Pierce Kraft. He then assisted on Kenyon's final goal, a man-up score from
J.T. Meyer.
Each team had just one man-up goal. DePauw was 1-of-7 with the extra man, while Kenyon was 1-of-4. DePauw held the edge in face-offs, 11-7, but Kenyon made up for it by forcing 24 Tiger turnovers.
In net,
Patrick Shevelson saw 32 DePauw shots and made 13 saves. Kenyon whipped up 41 shots and two DePauw goalkeepers combined for a dozen saves.
The Lords (4-2, 1-0 NCAC) now move on to play No. 11-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University next Saturday at McBride Field.
Senior Nick Lenard scored three goals Saturday and helped lift the Lords to a 10-6 win over DePauw.
Two of his three goals, as well as one of his assists, came in the fourth quarter of play.
