FLORENCE, Ky. – The Kenyon College Lords baseball team couldn't find a way to get its offense rolling Wednesday evening, but the host Lions of The College of Mount Saint Joseph lent a helping hand. The Lions committed seven errors and handed out 11 base on balls to the Lords, who left UC Health Stadium with a 5-3 non-conference win.
Kenyon is now 10-6 and has won three of its last four games. Wednesday's contest was originally scheduled as a home game for the Lords, but McCloskey Field wasn't quite ready to be played on, so the alternate venue was selected.
Kenyon bats managed just four hits in the nine-inning game, but the Lords pitching staff was able to compensate. Freshman
Jesse Bogacz got the start and went four innings. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk. He also fanned four. He exited with the Lords trailing 2-0 heading into the fifth inning.
Paul Henshaw then relieved Bogacz and gave up one run in two innings of work. Henshaw (3-1) earned the win because the Lords scored twice in the top of the sixth and three more times in the top of the seventh.
Those runs started rolling in when
Tyler Roldan reached base on a Mount Saint Joseph error. He advanced on another error and scored on a wild pitch.
Jake Dunn singled after Roldan rounded the bases. He then moved around the bases on the wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior
John Nahra.
In the top of the seventh inning, freshman
Matt von Roemer led things off with a walk.
Jono Chafe followed with another walk and both runners moved on a sacrifice bunt from Roldan. Both runners also ended up scoring on wild pitches. With the bases now clear, Dunn finally got a chance to swing the bat and ripped a double. He shuttled around the horn on an error and a passed ball, scoring the Lords' fifth and final run.
The double was Dunn's seventh of the season and the 50th of his career, which ties the all-time Kenyon mark set by Matt Marcinczyk '06. Dunn wound up 2-for-4 with two runs scored. He's now batting .538 for the season.
After a brief appearance from Kenyon reliever
Matt Delbridge, junior
Spencer Byers took over the mound and recorded the final eight outs for the Lords. He walked one, gave up one hit, struck out one, and earned his second save of the season.
Senior Jake Dunn was 2-for-4 in Kenyon's 5-3 win at Mount Saint Joseph. One of his hits was a double, which
tied him with Matt Marcinczyk '06 for Kenyon's all-time record of 50 career two-baggers.
