CLERMONT, Fla. –
Caroline Shipman,
Jane Symmes,
Katherine Englert, and
Allie McLane combined for 15 goals Monday evening and powered the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 win over the Mount Saint Mary College Knights. The game, held at the neutral-site National Training Center, was the first of the season for Kenyon.
Englert, a freshman, poured in three of the Ladies' first five goals. Shipman, a senior, assisted on one of those goals and also fired in one of her own before the Knights were able to score their first goal at the 19:37 mark of the first half.
Possessing a 4-1 lead just ten minutes into the game, Kenyon tallied four more goals and then five in a row later in the half. The blitz left the Ladies with a comfortable 13-5 advantage at halftime. Shooting accuracy, which was a bit of a problem for the Ladies last season, was no problem Monday. In fact, the Ladies scored those 13 first-half goals on just 19 shots.
The Ladies took their foot off the gas a bit in the second half, but remained in control. Following Shipman's six goals and three each from Symmes, McLane, and Englert, Kenyon received two scores from
Abby Coleman and one from
Kelley Russell.
Shipman and Symmes didn't just score goals. Shipman contributed four assists, while Symmes chalked up one assist, six groundballs, and nine draw controls. Russell complemented her single goal with three assists.
As a team, the Ladies out-shot the Knights 30-19 and went 5-of-9 on free-positions attempts. They were 11-for-13 on clears and won 16-of-28 draws.
In net, senior
Meredith Bentsen made nine saves to record her 30th career goalkeeping win for the Ladies.
Mount Saint Mary, which dropped to 1-1 with the loss, was led by three goals off the stick of Nicole Scicutella.
Senior Carolyn Shipman got the Ladies lacrosse season started Monday with six goals and three assists.
Her efforts helped boost the Kenyon women to an 18-8 win against Mount St. Mary College.
